I am an artist living in Devon and currently work with the redundant industrial warehouses and farm barns around me to make short video footage and cyanotype photography.
My work is concerned with the tracing of light, the passing of time and the recording of shadows. These overlooked spaces are traced in the dust of abandoned work and functions and have become provocative sites to create images. Although my images have emotional and social meaning to me, I prefer their stark suggestive symbols to speak for themselves. Poetry, phrases and experiences inspire my practice and by working in series, themes can evolve and transform.
During my studies at University of Wales Aberystwyth my interest in photography and printmaking began and the method of Cyanotype now allows tangible interaction with my surroundings. The light sensitive solution can be applied by hand to the size and type of paper appropriate for the image I have in mind. Through its exposure to the varieties of sunlight and development in water a deep characteristic blue emerges around pale forms. Using the found or everyday objects frees me from the need to represent them, and enables me to explore movement, letting go, and in some a surrealist narrative between them.
